Mobile Linux Keynote:

Seizing the Open Platform Opportunity

Wednesday, August 6, 2008
9:00 am – 10:00 am

Christy Wyatt
Vice President, Software Platforms & Ecosystem, Motorola

The explosive growth of open source platforms such as mobile Linux has offered developers new environments for creating feature-rich applications for one of the fastest moving consumer electronics markets -- mobile devices. For those looking to bring their innovations to market, finding the right platform and tool set to compile, debug and test mobile applications is often as challenging as the coding itself.

In this session, Christy Wyatt, Vice President of Software Platform & Ecosystem at Motorola, will identify the top development hurdles and share practical advice for navigating market complexity. She will also offer information on how application development – from requirements definition to testing and deployment – can easily be accomplished by leveraging a variety of integrated toolsets available today from Motorola.

Mass Collaboration and Linux Panel:

How achievements in server, mobile and desktop help each and every Linux user

Wednesday, August 6, 2008
4:30 pm – 5:30 pm

Moderated by: Jim Zemlin
Executive Director, The Linux Foundation

Panelists:
Christy Wyatt
Vice President, Software Platforms & Ecosystem, Motorola
David Liu
Founder, gOS
James Bottomley
Key Linux kernel sub-system maintainer and chair of the Linux Foundation's Technical Advisory Board

Never before in the history of the computing industry have there been so many developers and companies putting their collective contributions into one project – the Linux operating system. This discussion will give specific examples of major Linux milestones in business and on the desktop that have resulted from this mass community effort. It will also serve as a way for LinuxWorld attendees to more clearly understand how the development process works, what influences specific features and how to get involved at the level that makes sense for their individual or company requirements.

Jim will lead a panel featuring leaders from each major Linux trend including:

  • Server: Hear directly from a lead maintainer of the kernel on where Linux is headed.
  • Mobile: Motorola and Google are basing the future of mobile computing on Linux. How will this impact the enterprise?
  • Desktop: What's really behind the Wal-Mart Linux PC story

Technical Session:

Creating an End-to-End Mobile Linux Development and Simulation Environment Using Eclipse/TmL (BA8)

Thursday, August 7, 2008
11:30 am – 12:30 pm

Christian Kurzke
Architect, Developer Tools, Motorola

Eric Cloninger
Senior Product Manager, MOTODEV Studio for Linux, Motorola

Motorola is a leader in mobile Linux, and started the Eclipse "Tools for Mobile Linux" project in Summer 2007. Since then, we have developed a first version of a general embedded Linux Development, Deploy and Run environment.

TmL and Eclipse help to give developers a user-friendly, easy-to-use development environment. The goal is to enable both casual and dedicated Linux developers to create sophisticated mobile Linux applications. This session gives an overview of Eclipse as a basis for an Integrated Development Environment for C/C++ Linux mobile applications, and shows how such an IDE can improve the productivity of developers. We welcome developers currently creating applications for other mobile operating systems (Symbian, Windows Mobile) to this session; no prior expertise with Linux is presumed.
