Q & A with Rafael Camargo

Rafael Camargo, Motorola's Director of Mobile Linux Software Development - MOTOMAGX Platform, Mobile Device Business, will co-present "MOTOMAGX: Motorola's Next-Generation Mobile Linux Platform" at the upcoming MOTODEV Summits in London and Beijing. MOTODEV recently caught up with Rafael and asked him a few questions about his session and about MOTOMAGX.

Q. Why is your session important, and what will attendees learn?

A. Motorola has announced that Mobile Linux will power an increasingly larger share of our mobile devices. This session will provide an overview of the roadmap and the rich application development environment of MOTOMAGX, Motorola’s Mobile Linux platform.

Q. How does MOTOMAGX relate to Motorola's work with the LiMo foundation?

A. Motorola is a founding member of the LiMo foundation and one of the most active technology partners within it. As the LiMo APIs and reference implementations mature, MOTOMAGX will evolve to incorporate them. During the session we will cover the areas of the application development environment that will be aligned to LiMo's technology evolution.

Q. What does MOTOMAGX mean to developers?

A. MOTOMAGX will be Motorola's most open platform. It is based on Linux and open source, and it will expose a very rich set of services and APIs from the start. MOTOMAGX exposes novel UI framework and programming environments such as WebUI, Motorola's take on AJAX and Web 2.0 technologies. The openness and richness of the platform provide an ideal environment for developers to innovate and maximize the value of their applications and services. The use of Linux, open source APIs and Web technologies allows for a short learning curve by providing a familiar programming paradigm for application developers beyond traditional embedded or mobile environments.

Q. What new opportunities does MOTOMAGX provide for mobile developers?

A. MOTOMAGX will enlarge the existing mobile developer community by attracting developers from the Linux, open source and Web applications communities. It will also expand the opportunities for innovation for the current community of mobile developers. MOTOMAGX is also committed to adopting and driving open standards, increasing the portability and value of the software assets developed with our platform.

Q. Why another platform? Why is Linux the right choice for this new platform?

A. Why will anyone develop for anything than Linux once we increase the portfolio of products powered by Linux? (laughs)

Jokes aside, here are some powerful arguments to ponder:

  • Linux has some of the most developer-friendly and powerful development tools
  • Linux allows easy incorporation of open-source components into your application solution, reducing development effort and time to market
  • Linux has one of the largest developer communities out there, so there is a larger pool of talented and experienced developers to help with your application or join your team or company
  • Linux is almost the only way to go if you are considering an open-source model for your application or service
  • Linux, with its modern and modular kernel architecture, is poised to be the first mobile platform incorporating the latest and greatest hardware technologies. It is also the most likely engine for an emerging class of devices such as Internet tablets.

Q. Can developers already take advantage of MOTOMAGX?

A. Developers basing their applications in Linux, open source APIs and/or Web technologies are already on the path to ensuring an easy port and integration of their innovative solutions into MOTOMAGX and soon other LiMo devices. MOTOMAGX will soon publish a beta version of the SDK. We also recommend registering and becoming active members of MOTODEV. There are opportunities to participate in our early-adopter programs for MOTOMAGX.
