MOTODEV recently caught up with Simon and asked him a few questions about his session and about the evolution of Java at Motorola.
Q. Why is your session important, and what will attendees learn?
A. I believe it is important to show delegates an official view of Java™ ME from Motorola. By doing so we can show that through the availability of APIs in the products and platforms developers can deploy leading content to Motorola products. Attendeees also learn about some key features in the next version of MIDP that enable compelling applications.
Q. What’s coming up with MIDP 3.0?
A. We believe, that alongside the statement by Motorola to Opensource the MIDP 3.0 reference implementation and compliance tests, improvements such as concurrency, shared libraries and UI enhancements make for visible step up in the next generation of Java on mobile devices.
Q. What’s the most exciting new feature provided by MIDP 3.0?
A. As you know Motorola is the Technical lead to the industry for MIDP 3.0. Working with our partners in the JCP we believe that enhancements have been made to the environment that will allow the developer to harness the power of Java for mobile. The most exciting of which is LIBlets, the concept of shared libraries.
Q. There are a lot of technologies available to Motorola. Why Java?
A. JavaME is a well established, cross platform, high penetration technology with a highly active global community delivering content to consumers and carrier partners of Motorola. We believe that Java is a key technology in meeting consumer’s desire for mobile content today and tomorrow.
Q. What is the future of Java on Motorola products?
A. The future is very bright for Java on Motorola products we will continue to invest in this technology through Opensource initiatives and working with partners in the industry and the developer community. It will continue to be a collaborative effort by Motorola to ensure that we deliver the right environment for developers, carrier and consumers.
