To be eligible, all Entrants must be registered as MOTODEV developers with the Motorola MOTODEV developer program prior to registering for the MOTODEV Widget Challenge. MOTODEV membership is free.

How Judging Works

  1. SUBMISSION DEADLINE is February 27, 2009 (11:59 PM PST)
  2. To be qualified as a Finalist as well as a Category Prize winner your widget submission will be judged based on the criteria in the table below:

JUDGING CRITERIA
  1. Judging will be based on the Emulator available within the MOTODEV Studio for WebUI tool.
  2. Judging is a two step process including the selection of Finalists and Winners.

SELECTION OF FINALISTS

8 Finalists from each Category will be selected (104 Widget Finalists) and announced approximately on March 18, 2009.

SELECTION OF WINNERS

From the 104 Finalists, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place Winners for each Category will be selected (39 Category Winners). The Best Overall Widget will be selected from the Category Winners. All Winners will be announced at CTIA Wireless, April 2009.

The Judging Committee will comprise a panel of judges drawn from a diverse and experienced group of industry experts which may include employees of Motorola, sponsors, operators and other individuals familiar with mobile application design.

Judging Criteria Definitions

  • Applicability – Does the application bring an efficient and effective solution to an existing problem? Does it add new features for the consumer? Could this improve the user's productivity or support a user's lifestyle?
  • Originality – Does the application provide a new idea, or a new angle on an existing concept? Is it innovative?
  • Harmony of Design – Is the application easy to use and appealing? Does the design permeate the entire application (i.e. GUI design, livecon design, navigation, softkey features)?
  • Indispensability – Is the application compelling and essential, such as content the user just can't put down or a utility they cannot live without?
  • Locally Relevant – Does the application provide locally relevant content to the user in their language?
  • Effective use of APIs – Are existing handset resources used seamlessly within the application (for example, are softkeys mapped to logical handset features)?

What to Submit

  1. A digital copy of the application being entered in usable form. The executable file and any additional files required for installation or use should be included.
  2. A 16-bit color screenshot (minimum of 72 dpi) that bests depicts the Entered Application.
  3. User instructions document identifying how to use the application, key functionality, special features, etc.
  4. 50 to 100 word description of the Entered Application.
  5. 50 to 100 word description of the company/developer submitting the application.
  6. Tell us your story and be creative (i.e. PowerPoint presentation, video, etc.). The following information should be included in your story:
    • What inspired you to do create this application?
    • What problem are you trying to solve?
    • What do you think about mobile widgets?

All 6 entry materials must be well written in the English language to qualify.

To ensure proper uploads, all files uploaded should not exceed a maximum file size of 5MB. You may submit more than one file per application. Please compress your files prior to submission into one(or two) file(s) (i.e. zip file) to ensure proper upload.

4. Who is eligible to participate?

The Competition is open to all individuals who have agreed to the Official Rules and who are of the legal age of majority, at the time of entry, to form valid contracts in their respective country, province or state of legal residence and meet any applicable U.S., national, state, local, or provincial legal requirements for participation.

The Widget Developer Challenge is void in, and not open to residents of, Cuba, Iran, Syria, North Korea, Sudan, Myanmar, or to individuals and entities restricted by U.S. export controls and sanctions, and is void in any other nation, state, or province where prohibited or restricted by U.S. or local law. In addition, the Competition is void in, and not open to residents of the Quebec Province of Canada.

Employees of (i) Motorola, (ii) the parent companies, affiliates and subsidiaries of either Motorola, and members of their immediate families (defined as parents, children, siblings and spouse, regardless of where they reside and/or those living in the same household of each) are not eligible to participate.

5. How do I participate?

Entry into the Competition is a 2-step process: 1) Registration, 2) Submission. Registration is an electronic process for MOTODEV to collect contact information, high-level application information and submission intent. Submission is an electronic process to collect the entry materials that will be uploaded to MOTODEV. While the Registration and Submission steps will be open until the conclusion of the Competition, interested participants are strongly encouraged to register as soon as possible to indicate intent and to receive up to the minute Competition details.

9. How do I qualify for the Best Overall Widget?

All winners of the 3 Main Categories (39 Applications) will qualify and be entered to win the Grand Prize for the Main Category of Best Overall Widget.

The Grand Prize will consist of:

  • $25,000 Cash Prize
  • The announcement and recognition of the Entrant, their Application and placement at the respective tradeshow
  • A Grand Prize Winner's plaque commemorating their achievement – ARV $25
  • Promotion of the Grand Prize Winner’s Application on the MOTODEV website and elsewhere
  • Bragging rights as approved by Sponsor.

18. Does the widget have to be in English language or user interface?

The widget does not have to be in the English language however if you are submitting for the Best Local Content category please keep in mind that the widget should be designed to serve a specific regional audience, in their context, language, and lifestyle.

All entry materials must be written in the English language. All materials must be well written and grammatically correct to qualify.

19. Can I submit more than 1 widget?

Yes. A single unique application may be submitted to both a subject category and a regional category, but NOT to more than one subject or region. For example, a widget that tracks cricket scores may be submitted into the "Best Widget in Sports" category for Sports as well as "Best Local Content for India", but it may NOT be submitted for "Best Local Content for Latin America" as well. Entrant may submit multiple applications.
